Challenge #2 - Lucena & Philidor Positions

Many of you will already be acquainted with the topic of this video. However, since it is crucial and many more lessons will depend on this one, it is always helpful to review the basic King, Rook & Pawn endings. Reaching the Lucena Position will now be considered a win and the end of analysis much as we would for winning a Queen or heavy material. When the Philidor fails the defense, often the offense gains a Lucena position to win. Most King, Rook & Pawn vs King & Rook eventually disolve into either the Philidor or Lucena position.

This video covers Rook & Pawn vs Rook, queening the pawn, third rank defense, and others issues.

Lucena & Philidor Positions Video

- Goal:100%

If you think you know how to queen a pawn in a King & Pawn ending, take the test. This is essential knowledge. If you don't answer all of them correctly, then please see the video. Remember beginners work until they can get it right, strong players work until they can't get it wrong.

Once you have mastered this Quiz, move on to the next Challenge.
